University to host 2005 research symposium
Building on the success of a similar event in 2003, Binghamton University will be hosting a major statewide research symposium, Destination Discovery ’05, on March 23 and 24, 2005. The event will explore the changing face of sponsored research by means of both broad-based and targeted sessions designed to help faculty succeed in securing funding, collaborators and resources for their work. Harpur professor delves into discussion of science and religion
Sandra D. Michael, professor of biological sciences and the department's director of graduate studies, says yes. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and recently finished a four-year term on their Program of Dialogue on Science, Ethics and Religion (DoSER), a committee established in 1995 that seeks to increase the level of scientific understanding in religious communities and promote multidisciplinary study of the ethical and religious implications of developments in science and technology. Srihari named Distinguished Professor
K. (Hari) Srihari, professor of systems science and industrial engineering, has been named a distinguished professor by the SUNY Board of Trustees. A prolific scientist, Srihari is known as an expert in many diverse aspects of electronics packaging, including the exciting new area of opto-electronics packaging. Read more
Governor taps BU for high technology commercialization center
Binghamton University is in line for $21 million in state funding to establish a high technology commercialization center. The Small Scale Systems Packaging Center was one of two Binghamton University initiatives included in Governor George Pataki's State-of-the-State and 2004 state budget talks in the past two months. Greene: Signal goodness in your daily actions
Many economists contend that, for the most part, people act selfishly. In our current society where headlines trumpet headlines about greedy corporate executives and the like, it may be easy to agree. Yet people in general often perform unselfish acts like devoting considerable time and money to charities, volunteer organizations, public service and even to voting. In his newest book, Kenneth Greene, distinguished professor of economics, explains that pure altruism cannot explain such activities because of the free rider phenomenon. Read more
