One Binghamton University scholar will do research in South Africa and scholars from Japan and Indonesia will enrich Binghamton as part of the Fulbright Scholar program.

William G. Martin, professor of sociology and research scholar in the Fernand Braudel Center for the Study of Economies, Historical Systems and Civilizations, has been awarded one of about 800 Fulbright scholar grants to lecture and research at the University of the Western Cape, Bellville, South Africa. Martin’s topic will be the history of the relationship between institutions of higher education and research in Cape Town, South Africa and the United States. He will be in South Africa between January and September next year.

Juhaya Praja, vice rector of Sunan Gunung Djati, State Institute for Islamic Studies in Bandung, Indonesia is currently at Binghamton researching and lecturing on the topic, “Socio-Political Movement of the American Muslim After the World Trade Center Tragedy.” Praja will return to Indonesia in March.

Rohiyama Rui, associate professor in area studies at the College of Culture and Communication of Tokyo Women’s Christian University, will be a visiting researcher at BU starting in April. Her topic is, “From Ecumenism to Internationalism: American Women’s Ecumenical Foreign Mission Movement from 1890 to 1940.”

The Fulbright Scholar Program was established in 1946 and is named after its sponsoring legislator, Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas who saw the program as a way to build international understanding through mutual sharing of cultures and education.
